Udhagamandalam (Ooty), the "Queen of hill stations" is the capital of Nilgiri district. ooty is a land of dreams and a picturesque hill station. The height of the hills in the Nilgiri range varies between 2280 and 2290 meters, the highest peak being Doddabetta at a height of 2623 meters.

This famous hill station is at the junction of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka, three southern states of India. The area was inhabited by Todas. These tribal people still inhabit the area, but only around 3000 remain.

Ooty generally features pleasantly mild conditions throughout the year. Generally, the town appears to be eternally stuck in the spring season. Temperatures are relatively consistent throughout the year; with average high temperatures ranging from about 17–20 °C (63–68 °F) and average low temperatures between approximately 5–12 °C (41–54 °F).

The rainy season in Ooty is generally very cool and windy with high humidity. The wind chill may fall to as low as 5 °C (41 °F) during the day time. Wind is always high throughout the year. The lowest temperature was −2 °C (28 °F).[21] The city sees on average about 125 cm (49 in) of precipitation annually.

Botanical Garden

Ooty Garden have around a thousand species, both exotic and indigenous, of plants, shrubs, ferns, trees, herbal and bonsai plants.[9] In the centre of the Gardens lie a fossilized tree trunk estimated to be 20 million years old. The Gardens consist of several lawns with flowering plants, ponds with lilies, beds of flowers and ferns laid out in an Italian style, several plots of flowering plants, a variety of medicinal plants. The lower garden comprises the entrance and the lower lawns.

Tree species of botanical interest such as Hymnosporum flavum, Cordylline australlis, Cedrus deodara, Cupressus funebrils, Araucaria bidwillii, Cupressus macrocarpa, Cryptomeria japonica, Eucalyptus maculate, Eucalyptus citriodora, Salix babylonica, Salix heterophylla, Podocarpus taxifolia, Dracena lanuginosa, Pinus patula, Rhododendron arboreum, Quercus Montana, Quercus cerris, Quercus Serrata, Quercus grilffithi, Quercus illex, Magnolia grandiflora etc., can be seen alongside the lawn.

The nurseries consist of eight glass-houses and a series of terraces for introduction and breeding of exotic plants. The glass-houses are utilized for growing Begonias, Ferns, Cacti, Succulents, Orchids and Bulbous plants for providing a continuous supply of potted plants to be grouped periodically in the conservatories. The terraces are utilised for growing plants for cut flowers, seed and also for trial purposes.

Flower Show

The flower show is held for two days.[13] The inauguration of the show is held on the first day and on the second day, prizes are distributed to winners of various competitions held in connection with flower show. About 250 exhibitors participate in different categories on the day of flower show. Several government departments and voluntary agencies also display their activities for the benefits of the flower lovers and tourists.

More than 50 varieties of potted plants, 150 varieties of cut flowers, various kinds of tropical and temperate vegetables and tropical and temperate fruits are exhibited by the competitors. The Floral decorations, Indian and Japanese flower arrangements, Vegetable carving, Flower Rangoli, Bonsai etc., are the major attractions during the show days. The exclusive cut flower stalls from large private and public gardens are also an attraction during the show days. 59 rolling cups, 250 cups and cash prizes are awarded to the best competitors and exhibitors.

The flower show attracts about 150,000 tourists each year from all over the world.

Ooty Lake

Ooty Lake is a picnicker’s delight. Set amidst towering pines in the lush hillside, this 2.5-kilometre-long lake snakes through the Nilgiris, offering plenty of spots for scenic photo ops along the way. Ooty Lake stretches, in an irregular 'L' shape, for about 2.75 kms in length and varying distances in width(100m – 140m). For the curious, this lake was artificially formed by John Sullivan, the founder of Ooty, in 1823-25 by damming the mountain streams flowing down Ooty valley.

The lake is surrounded by groves of Eucalyptus trees with a railway line running along one shore.[1] During the summer season in May, boat races and boat pageantry are organised for two days.

At the far end is the Boat House, where all kinds of boats are available for hire from eight in the morning to six in the evening. Surrounded by lofty eucalyptus trees and shrubs the lake is a scenic delight to ones from the concrete jungles.

In recent years the lake and the boat house have become the hub of entertainment for the visitors.

Horse Riding

When you inflict Ooty the one thing the comes into your mind is the Horse ride. Horse riding in Ooty is fun and you will have a different experience in Ooty. Doddabeta Peak

Doddabetta is the highest peak in the Nilgiris. When you reach the characteristic flat top of the Doddabetta what awaits you is a visual treat of the surrounding Nilgiris. Being the highest peak you can get a bird’s eye view of the entire area and all that you see is green, green and more green. In the middle of all the green you find the beautiful city of Ooty miniaturized by the grandeur of nature. If you want to get a better look at the surroundings, not to worry, you have the Telescope House located on the top, which houses 2 telescopes and through which you can get a better view of the surroundings.

Rose Garden

Smack dab in the centre of the town, the Rose Garden pays homage to the flower of love by showcasing all its varieties across 10 acres of land. From miniature and hybrid tea roses to floribunda, ramblers and black and green roses, the Rose Garden is a horticulturalist’s delight with the unique species on display.

Pykara Water Falls

Situated about 21 kilometres from the main town of Ooty, the Pykara River is the largest in the region. Surrounded by eucalyptus trees, grassy meadows and encampments of the indigenous Toda tribe, the river flows over a series of waterfalls, one of which cascades down 61 metres. Tea Factory

Small and nice, tea factory that is frequented by tourists who visit ooty, although not much to do here, but it was quiet a new experience. You can smell the aroma of the fresh tea leaves as soon as you near the place. You will love how machines process the fresh tea leaves and package it. There’s also a shop where you can buy the tea processed at the factory. They also provided tea prepared from the freshly processed leaves and it tastes amazingly fragrant. This is a good place to show to the kids as well,sure they’d be delighted.

Ooty Mountain Railway

One thing that promises to be a highlight of your visit to Ooty is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway experience. If you are travelling from Mettupalayam to Ooty, go for the Ooty Mountain Railway, rather than any other mode of transport. The experience is really out of the world. . It runs from Metupalaiyam to Udagamandalam (Ooty), via Coonoor, in the Nilgiri Hills. The track is 46 kilometers (28.5 miles) long, and passes over 250 bridges (including 32 major ones) and through 16 tunnels. This railway is particularly picturesque because of the surrounding rocky terrain, ravines, tea plantations, and forested hills. Coonoor, with its world famous teas, is a tourist destination in itself.


A wonderful treasure trove of some of the most exquisite plant species in the world, the Sim's Park is an important sightseeing destination, if in Coonoor. The botanical garden houses more than 1000 species of different plants and trees which are scattered all over the sprawling park providing a very unique and beautiful view. The park is situated on the northern side of the Coonoor Railway Station and is divided into eight sections with the one with Sholas and widening footpaths being the most fascinating one

Mudhumalai National Park

There is a high diversity of animal life in the sanctuary with about 50 species of fishes, 21 species of amphibians, 34 species of reptiles, 227 species of birds and 55 species of mammals. Mammal diversity is higher in the dry deciduous and dry thorn forests than in the other habitats. Thirteen percent of all mammal species in India are present in Mudumalai wildlife sanctuar This sanctuary is home to several species of wild relatives of cultivated plants including wild rice, wild ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, solanum, guava, mango and pepper that act as a reserve gene pool for the cultivated plants.[6] In places mixed vegetation types are present. The deciduous trees shed their green leaves during the summer, and adopt a floral garb while the arrival of the monsoons hails fruits and tender greens.
